School Uniforms - Good or Bad?

Do you think it's a good idea for school uniforms? My daughter is starting high school and the kids all have to wear uniforms. Frankly I think it's a great thing because it puts everyone on an even keel--there's no issues of dress code (other than wearing the proper uniform and accessories) and the focus is taken off "individualism" as far as what's current and trendy on the designer scale and put on community as a school and teamwork and discipline and respect.

I think this will make the kids focus on one another as human beings rather than put the focus on one's makeup or hair do or other frivolous unimportant and insignificant issue that deters from their studies and comradery.

School uniforms are great. As the parent of kids, some who wore uniforms, some who didn't, I really, really, really, really see the benefits.

I spent less money on clothing. Yeah, the uniformed kid still had "civvies" but there weren't as many clothes.

Uniforms the school chose were quality garments that lasted forever. The tee shirts were inexpensive ($5-$7).

Kid got dressed faster in the morning.

Fewer clothing arguments.

The local transit could identify who the hooligans were by their clothing. THe school got calls %26amp; kids told to smarten up.

Research has shown that Canadian schools see uniforms as a method of underscoring the importance of academics, as opposed to US where uniforms are seen as a way to reduce crime.

I wish all schools had uniforms. I'm tired of seeing girls in skanky, sleazy hooker outfits, and boys dressed like junior rappers gone bad.

One caution. If your kid is required to wear a uniform, the teaching staff should also be in a school uniform too. My kids school started off this way, and everyone supported the uniform policy. Change of administration, and staff no longer required to wear uniform, and kids felt this was unfair.

I think it is a goof thing. The childern can know focus on education rather than the fashion show and who isn't wearing what.

having been a senior a few years ago , our highschool had to wear uniforms, and people still got picked on becuase their uniform wasnt nambrand. oh yes, kids can be slick. then it was are your khakis made by a designer?the leather brown shoes that were mandatory, everyone wanted timberlands,or eastlands,or duckheads. and if your shoes werent name brand, you still got picked on. so i just think that enforcing the uniforms was a waste of time, because it seemed as if the fights and arguments still continued.

Great idea. You don't have to worry about what you're going to wear. It doesn't cost a month's pay to get the latest fad every two weeks. Your daughter doesn't go to school looking like a $lut because 'that's what Britney Spears is wearing'. Of course, some uniforms look better than others. :)

I completely agree, I wish it had been that way when I was in school. Clothing and the way you dress and look takes such a toll on a teens self esteem. All schools should adopt uniforms.

You will find that it is a moot point. It makes absolutely no difference in the upbringing of the individual. It is just another rule to follow, nothing more, nothing less. It is statistically meaningless.

No. This is not a communist country. America prides itself on individuality. Why tell our kids 1 don't follow the crowd, 2 be your own person, 3 viva la differance and then say "Now dress like everyone else in the school"? My daughter went to a school with uniforms and the other kids still found things to tease her about... weight, glasses, shoes etc. Uniforms are a waste of money and time.

I do think it's a good thing... even if the uniform is just to say you have to wear a shirt with a collar and Khaki pants... It does put all the students on a level playing field instead of putting the lower income kids in a corner right off the bat... I used to really be against uniforms... using the self-expression argument, but all students can't be trusted to dress appropriately for school... Plus, it's the real world... I can't just dress how I want for work...It's good to instill some amount of responsibility in them....
