Cat has flees..help!?
You can double check this information. In fact, I encourage it, but this is the full and correct story.
Fleas will bite humans, but won't live on them. They don't live on your cat either...they just hop on to feed and drop off when they are done. They live in your carpet, floor cracks, pet beds, etc., where they lay their eggs and go through the larval stage. For every flea you find on your cat, there may be 90 others in various stages of development, in your house. You can go to all sorts of trouble or you can rid you house of fleas in a matter of days if you...
Get Frontline Plus, which is better than plain old Frontline. It is not a prescription item and is available at vets offices, some pet stores and on-line. The cheapest price I found is on a website called Vetshoponline ($25 and change for 3 month supply). The only thing is that they require that you pay through Pay Pal. There are other on-line sites (just google pet medications) that have it available and will take a credit card, but they are almost twice the price. At the most, it will cost you about $40.00 for a three month supply. Be sure to apply it to the cat's skin, not just the top of the fur. Part the fur to get it on the skin. That is important, if you want it to work properly.
If you use Frontline Plus, within days, your house will be flea free, without having to bomb, spray, or go through all kinds of additional expense and trouble. A good vacuuming, and empty the receptacle into, or dispose of the cleaner bag, in a sealed plastic bag, immediately afterwards is also helpful.
Be sure to mark your calendar and apply the next dose of Frontline Plus in four weeks. Some folks like Advantage, but, I had a bad experience with it being ineffective.

Take your cats to the vet and get them on flea control..the kind you get at the vet, not over the counter. I works great, and you will never see another flea.

Oh yeah, humans can get fleas. I would suggest a shampoo with teatree oil in it since it is a natural repellent.

I recommend calling your vet. Frontline (a monthly topical treatment) and capstar(a tablet that will kill all the fleas in 30 minutes on your cat) will help to clean your cats up. Thay can bite humans but they don't like us so they usually move back to the cats.

I get my house sprayed for bugs and spiders. My dogs live outside and seriously have never had a single flea. They don't even itch. I would kill the ones living in your home, and get some advantage and put it on your cat.

Fleas will feast on humans! Your cats can get worms from fleas so besides de-fleaing you should follow-up with a de-worming. The worm eggs are in the fleas and when your cat bites at the fleas on them they can inadvertently swallow some fleas and the worm eggs hatch in the cat. Best treatment is to send the cats to the groomer or vet for a flea dip and have your home treated at the same time. And you'll need some kind of flea preventative, even on indoor cats. They could have hitched a ride to your house on a friend or a friend's pet that visited.

I agree with Momcat, the vet is the only way to go. That stuff at discount stores doesn't work, so don't waste your money.
the flee control from the vet works, but you might have to put off a flee bomb in your house if they are in the carpet. Make sure you remove your animals before you do this, and don't forget to cover fish tanks if you have any.
Good Luck

Easy...I get stuck de-fleaing fosters all the time (I foster litters of stray kittens for the local humane society.)
First of all, comb them out. You'll need a flea comb (sold in all pet stores) and a bowl of soapy water (fleas can swim in regular water so add a drop of dish soap to the water.) Comb away. As you get the fleas, dip the comb into the water and drown those little buggers. The cat might be covered in flea dirt (dried up blood,) so I would also suggest bathing the cats using kitten/puppy shampoo (doesn't sting the eyes.)
Once they are bathed and dried, place Frontline on them. It will kill any fleas you may have missed, eggs, and prevent future infestations for the next 30-45 days.
As for your house, VACCUUM....and I mean everywhere. Under beds, in closets, etc. Once this is done spray a special chemical around that you can again get at all pet stores. Follow and directions precisely so you do no harm to your animals, though.
Good luck!
Oh, by the way, yes fleas will bite humans. They usually don't stick around, though.

I knew I had a serious flea problem when I started picking fleas out of my daughters hair. I don't have that problem anymore thanks to Frontline Plus. I think it works better than Advantage, but I guess it depends on your cat. Talk to your vet and ask what they suggest. It won't kill any fleas or eggs already in your home, but it will kill any fleas that bite your cat.

go to the vets, you shouldn't need to take your cat, or you can buy flea treatment from pet stores.
