Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

Last week, CNN delayed for a few hours the scheduled Tuesday night broadcast debut of its much-hyped documentary series "Planet in Peril" due to live coverage of the tragic wildfires that have displaced more than 500,000 people in Southern California. But that didn't keep CNN "golden boy" reporter Anderson Cooper from using the tragedy to tout the program he starred in as much as he could.

Cooper constantly claimed during the week that the fires provided further confirmation of the documentary's prediction of an eco-catastrophe. Cooper said that higher temperature due to global warming may have been a factor. It was a "timely documentary," Cooper said last Tuesday on CNN's "Larry King Live", because "California certainly seems to be in peril."

But ironically, much of the reason California is in peril is due not to climate change, but to the very environmental policies championed by Cooper's documentary and our new Nobel laureate, Al Gore. While, in its statement praising Gore, the Nobel Committee said that global warming may "threaten the living conditions of much of mankind," the current wildfires show that the more immediate threat to man comes from the champions of the gnatcatcher, kangaroo rat, and the Delhi Sands Flower-Loving fly.

Environmental mandates have made fire safety for humans take a back seat to the well-being of the aforementioned California creatures, as well as that of every bug and rat lucky enough to be listed as an "endangered species" under federal and state law. For over a decade, environmentalists have hamstrung Californians in their efforts to clear the dry brush that is providing the fuel for this massive fire. If any of these endangered or even "threatened" species are found in shrubs or bushes on public or private property, it becomes very difficult to give this vegetation even the slightest haircut. This is true even if city codes require firebreaks to be built.

An example of the legal strait jacket that homewoners faced in the areas hit by the fires is the "brush management guide" on the City of San Diego web site. The confusing instructions state that vegetation within 100 feet of homes in canyon areas "must be thinned and pruned regularly." But then, the same sentence goes on to state that this must be achieved "without harming native plants, soil or habitats."

Then in fine print at the bottom of the page, the real kicker comes in:

"Brush management is not allowed in coastal sage scrub during the California gnatcatcher nesting season, from March 1st through August 15th. This small bird only lives in coastal sage scrub and is listed as a threatened species by the federal government. Any harm to this bird could result in fines and penalties."

Coastal sage scrub is a low plant ubiquitous near coastal California that grows like a weed under almost any condition. And since gnatcatcher nesting season lasts almost six months, there could be much buildup of sage scrub that becomes hard for homeowners to control. Especially since the maintenance rules severely restrict the use of mechanical brush-clearing devices even when gnat nesting season is over.

The tragedy is that this shows that not much has changed even after previous warnings from experts that environmental rules were on a collision course with fire safety in California and many other places, because they prevented the removal of "excess fuel" for fires from dense stands of trees and vegetation. Southern California homes were lost in 1993 after the federal Fish and Wildlife Service told homeowners that mechanical clearing of brush would likely violate the Endangered Species Act. The reason: it could alter the habitat of a newly-listed endangered species called the Stephens kangaroo rat.

Some exemptions were made, and clarifications were issued, but landowners still face the lingering risk that the simple act of building a firebreak can send them down the river if an endangered species is anywhere near their property. California's Blue Ribbon Fire Commission, which had been created after wildfires in 2003 by then-Governor Gray Davis and whose members included Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., as well as state legislators of both parties, concluded that "habitat preservation and environmental protection have often conflicted with sound fire safe planning."

But did this bipartisan finding or any of the documented harms to fire safety from environmental rules make it into CNN's exploration of possible causes of the current fires? Not a gnatcatcher's chance. Instead, climate "expert" Cooper told viewers Wednesday night that the wildfires were "symptoms of a planet in peril. Fire, drought, deforestation; it's all connected."

Yet the data show that temperature for areas hit by the fire was well within average ranges, and came nowhere near the record highs. On Monday the 23rd, for instance the high temperature in Escondido was 84 degrees, and the high in Santa Ana was 87 degrees. According to temperature statistics from the National Weather Service, the mean high in both cities for that date is 79 degrees. What's more, the record high for that date is 102 degrees in Escondido (in 1929) and 103 degrees in Santa Ana (in 1965). So tell us again, Anderson, how global warming is to blame, when the weather where the fires struck was not nearly as hot as it was more than 40 years ago and almost 80 years ago!

What about those harsh Santa Ana winds? Well, they are pretty strong. Here's one writer's description: "It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch."

Woooo! What a great description of the winds last week. Except that this passage wasn't written last week, last month, or last year. It was written by detective fiction master Raymond Chandler to describe the Santa Ana winds of about 70 years ago. It's in the opening paragraph of his famous short story "Red Wind," first published in 1938. So rough winds are nothing new under the California sun!

What's really changing the "climate" in Southern California is that there is more fuel for fires, since much less of the brush, as well as disease-infested trees, can be cleared, thanks to environmental mandates.

The problem is even worse on land owned by the federal and state governments. To satisfy the feds, San Diego has placed more than 170,000 acres off limit to development for the exclusive purpose, in the city's words, of "protect[ing] habitat for over 1,000 native and non-native plant species and more than 380 species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals." Hugh Hewitt, the California radio talk show host and author who is also a real estate attorney, has noted in the Weekly Standard:

"The land that has passed into 閳ユonserved' status is at even greater risk of fire than private land that is home to a protected species because absolutely no one cares for its fire management policy. The scrum of planners, consultants and G-11s that put together these plans should be monitoring these areas closely. Instead, they regulate and move on to savage the property rights of the next region."

And enviro groups also get more and more land locked up by conveniently finding more species to petition the government to protect. In California, as in other places, it's often a case of creative subdividing of essentially the same species. First it was the Stephens kangaroo rat whose designation as endangered put much brush clearance off limits. Then, in 1998, the San Bernardino kangaroo rat got listed. Also under federal protection is the Fresno kangaroo rat. And so on and so on.

Across the country, fires have become more destructive as trees and shrubs gain "protected" status preventing them form being cleared. As Bill Croke noted last week in American Thinker, In the last two decades annual timber production on the national forests in the West has decreased from roughly 12 billion board feet to less than 3 billion today. This has resulted in brush-choked forests with large "fuel loads."

The ironic thing is that all this "protection" at the expense of humans doesn't necessarily work out for the gnatcatchers -- not to mention more majestic creatures -- anyway. According to the Associated Press, the fires struck close to the San Diego Wild Animal Park, threatening condors, a cheetah, and many other animals. The Blue Ribbon Fire Commission found that the 2003 wildfires resulted in "the loss of valuable watershed, wildlife, and critical environmental habitats."

Of course, saving species never really was the objective of many enviros. It's just a subterfuge for their main interest of controlling the human species.

Endangered Species Act abuses, including those that prevented fire breaks in Southern California, were an issue that helped get the GOP in power in 1994. But with some exceptions like former Rep. Richard Pombo of California, Republicans began to abandon this issue, lest they be branded as anti-green. It's time for the GOP, as well as truly moderate Democrats, to befriend again the threatened species known as the beleaguered property owner.

And if the Nobel Committee really wanted to give an award to folks preventing a hazard threatening mankind, they should rescind Al Gore's prize and hand it to the brave California firefighters whose jobs have been made so much harder by the nonsensical practices of the environmental movement.

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

I agree that yours is a long question. I also agree that environmentalist are misguided. It is one thing to save the whale from harpooning, or baby seals from getting smacked with baseball bats, it is quite another to think that by non forestation and good forestry planing we can not harvest and control our forest and still have a habitat for wild species. The spotted owl, save their nest, what happens when a forest fire burns it down. The scrub you speak of, now those poor birds no longer have a nesting habitat, my guess is that come the nesting season, they will find one suitable. This is typical radical behavior, not give a solution that is in the best interest of all concern. I say your on the right track. The solution is protect the habitat from fires. The species will thrive, or maybe not, isn't that what Darwin's whole theory is about, survival of the fittest? If they don't adapt, then surely they will be extinct in the future, not because of man, but because they failed to evolve.

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

long one.

I would add the elimination of nuclear power to the list.

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

to me its funny that he would attribute the fires to that seeing as how they found out it was done by an arsonist...plus if the believed in control burning not so much land would burn like it is.....

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

These fires have been burning for hundreds of years.

California, the world capitol of consumption, was running out of real estate in posh locations so they expanded willy nilly into the fire zone.

Now the fires that have always been burning, are relevant.

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

Exactly

(I skimmed all of it)

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

It's all a perspective yours, mine, his, hers....Go ahead and waste your breath=)

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

I aint gonna read past your question, the rest is soap boxing

It has been going on since they have been around

Remember them

spray painting baby seals

driving spikes in trees

driving the most untuned vechicles known to man north of cuba

leaving their trash every where they protest

Dont know

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

Environmentalists don't cause more harm than good.

How could they?

The American fires are down to other issues

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

Wow, long question... I don't think that environmentalists necessarily cause more harm than good. They are (for the most part) well intentioned people who feel that things need to be preserved. The fires in California were caused by policies enacted due to the pressure from environmentalists, true. However, the solution they came up with (i.e. suppressing all fires and allowing no logging) was flawed. So while the environmentalists were right in wanting to save the "woodland creatures" they were wrong about how to do it. We've learned, and hopefully things will change in the future, but it does take lots of money to get the forests to where they need to be.

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

You should be reported for abusing Yahoo!Answers community guidelines (..your non-question is really a "rant"...) But I'm sure not going to hit the ol' "Report Abuse" button because everything you've posted is absolutely true and lays bare the absurd agenda of tree huggers and their ilk.

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

Environmentalists are sociopaths. Plain and simple.

There's no reasoning with whack jobs that would - because there are "too many humans" - rather throw their own child in front of a train to save a spotted owl.

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

ARe you asking a question or writing a novel. In any case, you are on the wrong side of this debate; next time, don't waste so much effort trying to defend the indefensible.

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

how were you able to write so much without adding details?

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

Because they want to blame EVERYTHING on global warming and the real culprits may not get caught. Their agenda has become more important than the lies they have to tell to bolster it. So many reasons, choose one.

Even funnier is it was reported that one of the arsonists was caught. But I guess global warming made him do it...it wasn't a natural disaster, it was inflicted by a criminal. Ca. environmental policies just made sure he was VERY successful with his arson.

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

Great post. I lived in California for eight years in the 80s and every year we had fires. In fact the same hill that caught fire twice while I was there now has homes on it.

As for the Santa Anna winds, I remember times I had to walk backwards while leaning to get from one class to another in high school.

Simple fact is more people have built more homes in places where they shouldn't have.

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

They do more harm than good because they have very narrow tunnel vision: They only focus and are only interested in the benefit that they are doing, and not any of the negative consequences - even if the negative consequences are much worse than any benefits.

A lot of of it is fanaticism. Sometimes people let themselves get to the point where they become so fixated and obsessed about achieving a goal, that they only ask themselves if the goal COULD be achieved rather than if it SHOULD be achieved. Often times a fanatic doesn't care HOW it gets achieved either, and how much damage it does on the way as long as the goal is achieved.

Example: Nature First is a very radical group that is known to "spike" trees in the upper northwest states of Washington and Oregon. This means that they drive large iron or steel spikes into trees that lumberjacks will eventually harvest. Lumberjacks will cut down the trees, and the trees will be sent to a factory where they are usually sent through a large saw unit. The saw unit hits the spike, and the blade shatters and causes injury to any person within a certain vicinity of the machine.

I watched one documentary in particular where one man had his face mangled and lost some eyesight when the saw machine hit a spiked tree, and the blade broke and mutilated his face.

Point of the story: Nature First succeeded in their goal: to stifle the lumber industry (at least temporarily), and they had their narrow tunnel vision (preserving trees), but the "HOW" was reckless and outrageous (sabotage the lumber and risk killing or seriously injuring innocent people).

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

In the spirit of full disclosure, I like animals more than I like people and I was born in a tree. That said, I don't think you should lump all "environmentalists" into a group. Generalizations are generally wrong! I actually read your whole question and while thought-provoking, it's a little one-sided. Blaming environmentalists for the CA wildfires is just as silly as blaming God. It happened. There was a lack of rain for a long time. Global warming, I don't know but "generally" plants tend to burn more when they don't get water. Basically we need something called common sense. Some of these property owners should have spoken up but maybe they were too busy having lattes at Starbucks? While do California yuppies cause more harm than good? (LOL) And hindsight's 20/20, huh?

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

Most of the environmentalist do much more good than harm. There are a few extremists that go too far, but most of us are good people. I highly recommend watching the Anderson Cooper documentary, "Planet in Peril," although it's not the planet that is in danger.

Human beings are in danger because of the dwindling resources on earth, that is caused by greed, overpopulation, stupidity, and the short-sightedness of our leaders. I give Anderson Cooper credit for making it clear that overpopulation is one of the biggest threats to our environment. Many environmentalists refuse to mention the overwhelmingly negative impact that human overpopulation has on our environment.

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

.Thanks! For saying it so well,I 100% agree I did happen to see that program, and it was insulting to anyone with common sence.

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

OK. i just bet you could have condensed that. Good question though. We do need environmentAList to remind unthoughtful people like me that we need to clean up after our selves. I am a hunter/fisherman and i know the only ways ill ever be able to do either in the future is to take care of what we have. Some people take it too far though but i really believe in al gore's message as well as coopers they just take extremes with it. fires can be set by matches. but maybe the state of our environment has made it harder to put out the flames. I say cooper is a journalist. Not an expert in global warming. and btw i only read the first paragraph of ur question i have a novel that im working on and didnt expect to be reading one on Y! answers

Why do environmentalists cause more harm than good?

I doubt anybody read all that.

I disagree. Without people working for cleaner air and water, nothing would ever get done about it.

How do you think I should handle these women at work ?

Human resource seems to be afraid to approach these women .Its not just me they hassle but many just give up when they realize HR is afraid to approach them . They decide that they should be the judge in your life.

1) Because I am native south American with a mix of chinese ,German portugese and indian .I have long straight hair oriental eyes and came out with a darker complexion than the rest of my immediate family .Which of course is no cause of alarm with my parents lol...as they know my mom has indian and native indian in her ancestory .As my dad looks chinese and my mom and sister Hispanic they have questioned if my family is not RASICT against me ! How ridiculous! They have tugged my hair to make sure its not hair extensions! And told me I should be dating a black man instead of being married to an Italian...Like I said they have not just harrassed me !! They have also approached a Jamaican guy and insulted him for not dating in his race and ridiculed his girlfriend for taking

How do you think I should handle these women at work ?

Have a tape recorder and tape the harrassment. Take the tape to HR and to your superior and play it for them. If they don't do anything about it, tell them you are contacting a lawyer. Talk to a labor lawyer and find out what your rights are in your state. Harrassment is illegal.

How do you think I should handle these women at work ?

Hmmm... ?

How do you think I should handle these women at work ?

tell em to p*ss off!

How do you think I should handle these women at work ?

Can't you just nip this in the bud?

Just come down on them so loud and hard that they are chicken to ever broach the subject again.

Make them take the long way around you.

How do you think I should handle these women at work ?

Have you yourself approached human resources about this? What about your manager? Someone should absolutely step in. This kind of behavior should not be tolerated. Next time stand up for yourself and tell them they are being rude and that they had better settle down.

How do you think I should handle these women at work ?

Well I guess it depends on where you work. If you work at a company that is pretty large, then you they usually have an employee hotline you can call to make complaints. Also, if it is a larger company then there is usually a district and regional manager, I would bring it up to them. If not and this is just a small business I would talk to your boss. If he/she does not do anything about it, and it is bothering you that much, I would either quit and find a new place to work after making a scene with them (nothing out of control, just basically giving them a little taste of their medicine -- ask them what gives them the right to judge everyone -- ask them what is so messed up in their life they have to harass everyone to make themselves feel better). If this does not sound like good advice I guess I would probably just ignore them and smile when they say something. I just wouldn't communicate to them. When they ask for your help or advice I would also just ignore them. If all else fails, file harrassment through the police. Hope everything goes well.

How do you think I should handle these women at work ?

Reverse psychology ignore them. Stick to your work and do no wrong with the boss. If it persist over a few days then tell them to stop as you are offended then simple if it continues go to doctor and get time of. The boss will have to deal with it. You could consider legal action if you feel serious unlawful comments been made etc......

How do you think I should handle these women at work ?

Document everything! Report it to your supervisor. If your supervisor does nothing, then report it to their supervisor. Make sure you do so IN WRITING. Contact a lawyer who will offer free consultations.

Do not fight fire with fire however, though it may be tempting.

One thing that disturbs me is that they are actually pulling your hair. Once they touch you, it crosses the line and they are not just committing assault, but it is now battery. You CAN press charges. The documentation will help your case.

How do you think I should handle these women at work ?

Contact EEOC, Equal Employment Opportunity Complaint processing at 800-649-4000.

Make sure to have ALL of your ducks in order: all racists comments, physical contacts, demeaning looks all lined up with a sentence or two describing each act and then a witness or two around that can corroborate. For example, your diary would read:

October 7, 2006 - At 2:30 pm Sherry W. said I should ask my dad if he was, "Racist against his own family for making kids that look as 'unique' as we do." Witnesses: Mike D., Warren L., and Tina S. This was by the water cooler and we all have to use our pass card to get into the room so there's a computer entry of us all being there at that time.

To hell with your HR department have the Federal Govt. start asking questions you'll see diversity training very soon.

How do you think I should handle these women at work ?

Sounds like HR or the higher ups (maybe the matter needs to be taken to them instead) need to just take the easy route and just fire them. Work place harassment is illegal, and the physical contact makes it worse. Technically it may be a situation where someone could be able to seek legal action if they chose to, especially since the company seems to act like they are condoning it when they have already received complaints, even if they don't mean to.

How do you think I should handle these women at work ?

Sounds like there's some serious hatin' going on. That and the fact that your HR sucks! No one should have to put up with that, especially at work. Its the law and they need to deal with it.

Even thought America is considered a melting pot, some people prefer not to mix because they fear change, fear losing themselves, or are just plain racist. Minorities can be racist too (which I find difficult to comprehend, as I am a minority myself). Most of the time, they think its easier to pick on someone else rather than face their own issues.

I'd contact HR and put it in writing. If they won't do anything about it, they're just as responsible for the bad work environment. I guess you'll just have to decide if this is a fight you want to pick.

I wrote a story Earlier and all of you loved it! So, here's some more! Do you like the revised

PREFACE

I focused on nothing but the rheumatic pattern of my breathing. In and out. Inhale and exhale. I was vastly petrified. He walked toward me with a shady smile on his face. I awaited agony and pain.

There was no warmth or bliss. The caring features vanished and turned into harsh, cold structures. How terribly I grieved to be safe in his arms. In his arms. I knew that he was gone as much as I knew that this would be hurtful. He took a step forward balancing all of his weight on one foot and smiled in the way that made me cringe, then, he lunged.

Chapter One

Acquaintance

Sixteen.

Perfect age, right. Wrong. This is when everything starts to change. Especially for me. Feelings are more sensitive. Sensitive. I really wished that word didn鈥檛 exist. It hurts. I used to be sensitive.

But, that was before I knew. Before I knew the truth. We鈥檒l get to that later.

The alarm clock went off and I rose up in my bed. At first I had to think. Where am I? I remembered. Lushe. I just moved from Florida to an old, deserted Indian town called Lushe. How much I long to be back in Florida with my sister Carol. We had it great in Florida. Beaching it every day. We were inseparable. Many people don鈥檛 get to have that kind of relationship with their sisters. Then Dad had to step into the perfect picture. It鈥檚 like he just took the picture, ripped it into tons of little pieces, threw it on the ground, and stomped on it.

Dad thought that it would be great if I spent a little time with him and Grandpapa Frank. After Mom died I do have to say that I鈥檝e been moping, but I was doing just fine with Carol. Now, I鈥檓 moping more than ever.

I got up from the bed and put on my bunny slippers. This is going to be a long day. I raced down the stairs and opened the pantry. I got out some eggs, milk and flour. As soon as I poured them in a bowl, Dad came in.

鈥淒id you sleep well? I heard you tossing and turning all night.鈥?he said with a worried look on his face.

鈥淵eah, I鈥檓 fine,鈥?I said. 鈥渏ust a bad dream.鈥?

鈥淥h, okay. Well, can you make me a muffin too. I鈥檓 starving.鈥?he threw in there. He walked out of the room.

鈥淚鈥檓 making pancakes.鈥?I shouted back.

鈥淵eah, right. Okay.鈥?he replied. I suppose he just wanted something to eat.

鈥淐鈥檓on Maria, it鈥檚 not gonna be that bad! You鈥檒l have fun! Meet some new people, you need to have some fun. You鈥檝e been so鈥?.鈥?my Dad paused at that, 鈥渟o鈥︹€?mopey.鈥?br> 鈥淚鈥檝e not been mopey!鈥?I shouted. I think that I shouted a little too sharply.

鈥淕et in the car.鈥?he said. I had said it too sharply. My Dad and I were on our way to my new school. The first day of school. Maybe school would be sanctuary. Maybe Dad wouldn鈥檛 be around every corner offering me cookies and milk and comforting and those dreaded bear hugs. Maybe, just maybe I could find some real friends. Friends that weren鈥檛 in my immediate family or were from the animal race.

I reached for the radio button, but he touched the back of my hand, signaling that he wasn鈥檛 in the mood. Or I had made him too angry.

We drove past some trees and dusty buildings. My dad really did live in a dump. We passed so many shattered things. Imagine a ghost town and it was worse than that. One of the log cabins that we passed, we stopped at. It was really little. One door that was on the side and two or three windows on the back. I wondered why not in the front. Were they trying to keep the sunlight out?

I was awoken from my thought from a deep, husky voice.

鈥淲ell, hello! Long time no see! I鈥檝e been waiting to see you since you was a little young鈥檜n.鈥?it said.

The windows were so tinted that I had to roll down my window to get a look. I reached for the handle and twisted it downward. There stood an old man, he was much shorter than I was. In fact, he was probably shorter than a seven or an eight year old. Then I noticed why, he was in a wheelchair.

鈥淲hat鈥檚 this young鈥檜n鈥檚 name again Bill?鈥?he asked my Dad.

My dad smiled at me and then at the old man. 鈥淚t鈥檚 Maria Dad.鈥?

鈥淒ad?鈥?I asked my Father.

鈥淗oney, this is your Grandpapa Frank. You鈥檒l be spending time with him a bit.鈥?

I was so shocked that I didn鈥檛 even notice the young looking man that walked up.

鈥淭his is my little helper, Haiden.鈥?he smiled. 鈥淗e helps out a lot around here.鈥?

Haiden smiled and put his hand out. 鈥淚t鈥檚 nice to finally meet you, Maria.鈥?he said. I couldn鈥檛 understand why this boy was so peculiar. He spoke normal. He walked normal. He just didn鈥檛 look normal. He had dark eyes. Dark eyes. Almost black. Long, black hair put up in a ponytail. He was so big and muscular, you would think that he was an underwear model, instead of a help.

鈥淒o you like it around here so far?鈥?Grandpapa Frank said with a tone that made me think there was some reason we shouldn鈥檛 like it.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a lot different from Carol鈥檚 in Florida, but I鈥檒l have to get used to it.鈥?I said. 鈥淭hank you for letting me stay here.鈥?

He smiled in agreement. 鈥淚鈥檓 glad to have you,鈥?he winked in Haiden鈥檚 direction. 鈥渕aybe you could help Haiden out in the garage. He could use some assistance.鈥?He threw another glance at Haiden, who was standing innocently enough.

鈥淪he could help out if she wants, but if not, I don鈥檛 really need any. Thank you though.鈥?he replied reluctantly.

鈥淲ell,鈥?he said, 鈥淚 best be going. I have much more work to do.鈥?He looked straight at me then. Like he was trying to tell me something without physically speaking. 鈥淕ood day, Maria.鈥?He smiled as he walked off.

鈥淕ood day.鈥?I said again. I looked at the clock on the car. Seven fifty-two. 鈥淒ad,鈥?I said, now focusing on the more important things. 鈥淚鈥檓 going to be late!鈥?

鈥淥h, look at the time. I am so sorry Frank, I have to go now! I鈥檒l see you later. Maria will come by right after school! Won鈥檛 you Maria?鈥?Dad said looking at me while he raised his eyebrows. Telling me to say yes.

鈥淥f course I will. Right after school.鈥?I instantly regretted saying it.

We pulled away from the driveway and headed for school. I had so many questions that I wanted to ask Dad. Why was Frank in a wheelchair? Why did Haiden act so weird? But, I decided not to ask. I would always get the same answer I always got. 鈥楽ave em鈥?for the Beavers鈥? It was liable to come up sometime anyway.

We pulled up to it, a school that was supposed to be a school. But it really looked like an old, run down, fit for mice, factory. Or something of the sort.

I opened the door of the truck and walked on the cold uneven pavement-that was supposed to be a sidewalk-to first period. I heard some footsteps behind me. Oh no. I didn鈥檛 want Dad to follow me. He did anyway.

鈥淒ad, I don鈥檛 need you to walk in with me like I鈥檓 some kindergartener. I鈥檓 fine on my own.鈥?I said, while turned around completely the other way. Sure enough Dad wasn鈥檛 there. Whose steps did I hear. Everyone was already in first period. I ran to class.

I had hoped that I would meet some nice acquaintances and talk some friendly talks. I was wrong. You know how it鈥檚 the first day of school and all the teachers make you stand up in front of the class and give a brief description of, what you鈥檙e name is, what your favorite color is, blah, blah, blah. I hope I don鈥檛 have many teachers like that here. I am not so talented in front of people. I walked up to Mr. Barren鈥檚 class and sat down. Mr. Barren was plump. He had a mustache that grew down to his bottom chin and his desk looked like a raccoon had a party on it.

鈥淕ood morning Class.鈥?he boomed.

Silence.

鈥淚 said, Good morning Class.鈥?he boomed again, repeating his words.

鈥淕ood Morning Mr. Barren.鈥?said a group of obviously not amused kids. I don鈥檛 think they wanted to be here as much as I didn鈥檛.

鈥淪tudents, I am going to go down row by row and you tell me and the class your name. Ready,鈥?

Oh no. I can鈥檛 do this. This is going to be horrible.

鈥淢y name is Grace Richardson.鈥?said the girl in front of me. 鈥淗ello everyone.鈥?br> Why couldn鈥檛 I be like her?

Mr. Barren focused his eyes on me. 鈥淵es, go ahead.鈥?he said.

I stood up and got to my feet. I could feel that horrible nauseated pain in the pit of my stomach.

鈥淗-he-hello. M-my n-name is,鈥?I looked up at the twenty-five kids staring at me with un-amused faces. 鈥渕-my n-name is..鈥?

鈥淕o ahead,鈥?Mr. Barren told me again, getting agitated. 鈥渨e all want to hear.鈥?

I had the feeling in my stomach again. I felt like I was going to cough. My head spun and everything went swirling. Then, everything went black.

I listened to a high pitched, crackly voice coming just a few feet away from me.

鈥淚 think that she had quite a mess out there.鈥?the voice said. 鈥淗er blood pressure is up high. I don鈥檛 think she needs to stay in school for the rest of the day. She needs her rest.鈥?br> I was wondering who she was talking to.

鈥淚鈥檒l take her home.鈥?said a beautiful tone. I thought that it couldn鈥檛 even begin to be a voice of a human. It was just too graceful. The voice was like the ocean, like the heaven鈥檚 angels. I already loved the voice-even though I had no idea whose it actually belonged to. Someone picked me up with one arm, put me over their shoulder and carried me out the door. Before I knew it, I was at my truck. But, how did they know it was my car?

I opened my eyes and saw the most beautiful figure that I ever thought was possible. He had black hair, short cut and shimmering in the sunlight. But, when I looked at him, it wasn鈥檛 just his hair shimmering, but his whole body was shimmering in the light. Beautiful eyes, no wait beautiful doesn鈥檛 even begin to cover it. Picturesque eyes. Gorgeous little things. I saw all of this while in his arms. Remember that I don鈥檛 even know this beautiful little devil鈥檚 name.

鈥淚s this your car?鈥?he said. I was so drowned in his beauty, he had to say it again, before I could hear him. My ears weren鈥檛 in command with my eyes.

鈥淚 said, is this your car?鈥?he said again with a smile on his face. He was probably used to all this attention, he seemed to be enjoying it.

鈥淵es.鈥?I managed to get out of my almost stunned mouth.

鈥淎re you okay.鈥?he turned the corners of his mouth into a smile. (by the way, gorgeous smile)

Here we go again with the-having to say it twice before I noticed that his dazzling mouth said anything with that heaven鈥檚 angels voice-thing.

鈥淚 think so. How did you know that this was my car?鈥?I asked, puzzled still.

He didn鈥檛 answer. I didn鈥檛 expect him to.

Here I was, in my car, with a total and complete stranger driving me to my house. Who is also driving me home. I鈥檓 going to have to tell him where I live in a few minutes. Or will he just magically know that also.

鈥淚 haven鈥檛 seen you around here before, Maria. Are you knew?鈥?the stranger asked.

He looked at me long and hard. The way Haiden had. It frightened me. It was like they were trying to bear deep into my soul. Like they were trying to get answers to a question that I had no idea what the solution was, but if they looked long enough, they would find out.

鈥淗ello.鈥?he said while waving his hand back and forth in front of my face. 鈥淎re you going to pass out again?鈥?br> He knocked me back into consciousness. 鈥淗ow do you know my name?鈥?I asked. He knew that too.

鈥淥h,鈥?he said. He paused and got that same look on his face. This scared me also, for he was driving. Another thing that almost made me pass out was the speed at which he was driving at. I could see nothing but a blur of green and brown. Just like the little fiasco this morning.

鈥淵es, how do you know me?鈥?I said again. Getting agitated at him.

good writing......

I wrote a story Earlier and all of you loved it! So, here's some more! Do you like the revised version better?

Um, it sounds like an knock off copy of Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Like you just changed names and descriptions, the way she meets people, and how it starts. But like the whole things sounds like Twilight almost! But I like your writing style and your very good and it makes me want to read more, but it still sounds like Twilight!

It's not just little things that are like Twilight, there HUGE things. Like the speed he's driving, sparkling(or how ever you worded it), gorgeous smile! Knowing her name, even though she didn't tell him! Theres a lot more. You really should change it because no one wants to read an un original piece of writing, especially from a very, very liked book!

I wrote a story Earlier and all of you loved it! So, here's some more! Do you like the revised version better?

This isn't some writing website. Stop posting your stuff here. Don't you know how many people come looking for short stories to use as their homework for English instead of writing it themselves? And nobody wants to read a story on Yahoo. I mean, come on.

Post it on fictionpress.com, instead. It's free, writer-friendly, and you get reviews for each chapter/story. Enjoy.

I Have some questions on Heat(physics)?

1One way that heat is transferred from place to place inside the human body is by the flow of blood. Which one of the three heat transfer processes best describes this action of the blood? Justify your answer.

2Some animals have hair, the strands of which are hollow, air-filled tubes. Other animals have hair that is composed of solid tubular strands. Which kind of hair would be more likely to give an animal an advantage for surviving in very cold climates? Why?

I Have some questions on Heat(physics)?

You know 'justify your answer' sounds like something that it would say on a piece of homework.

Maybe you should do it yourself.

Oh... I'll give you a hint - look up 'convection'.

I Have some questions on Heat(physics)?

1) I would compare it to CONVECTION because a movement of heated material is involved. 2) My guess is the hollow hair as the air in its core would act as an insulator. 3) Consider melting points of Fe and Cu. Also consult a good physics text for a table of Thermal Conductivity. 4) Think CONDUCTION: The nail is conducting the heat into the center of the potato -- and the nail is a better thermal conductor than the flesh of the potato. 5)....collapsed? Slid off? Slope of the roof and surface of roof and temperature of roof surface would all effect the longevity of snow on the roof.

I Have some questions on Heat(physics)?

I won't flat out answer these for you, but I will give you some hints that should help.

1. Well, the three types of heat transfer are a) radiation, b) convection, and c) conduction. It should be pretty obvious that your blood doesn't radiate heat to other parts of your body, that leaves either b) or c). One more hint would be, if your blood did not circulate through your body, do you think you would stay as warm? (disregarding the whole "death" side-effect of such a condition)

2) An animal's fur helps to keep its body heat inside, and not lost to the air by conduction through the skin. So, is air a better or worse conductor of heat than solid fiber?

3) What do you think would happen if you held a copper rod in a fireplace for very long? Would you tell the ER doctor that it was radiation, convection or conduction that burned the crap out of your hand?

4) There is such a thing as a convection oven, and the nail trick wouldn't work as well in one. However, I bet Grandma doesn't have one.

Any Christians have more examples of Bible contradictions to add?Any explanations before list gets a

Any Christians have more examples of Bible contradictions to add?Any explanations before list gets any longer?

First off, you have WAY too much time on your hands.

Second, you have to realize that the bible was written about 2000 years ago by multiple people who had their own interpretation of the events that took place.

Also, stories change the more they are told. Everyone puts in their own twists and enterpretations.

Any Christians have more examples of Bible contradictions to add?Any explanations before list gets any longer?

WOW! not me - can't argue with that!

Any Christians have more examples of Bible contradictions to add?Any explanations before list gets any longer?

how the hell did they give you that much room? I only have so many characters when i ask a question

Any Christians have more examples of Bible contradictions to add?Any explanations before list gets any longer?

Surely did not read all that.

Surely hope you have some semblance of a life. You are so very sad, dude.

Any Christians have more examples of Bible contradictions to add?Any explanations before list gets any longer?

Anyone wonder why this fellow chose to give up 20 points to ask the same question in four different places? Including places where the topic is way off-topic.

Just to add some information, the name Tabitha is Aramaic. There is one mention (no more, no less) of "Tabatha": In the television program Bewitched, the daughter of Samantha seems to have been called Tabatha. Although the spin-off series is indeed spelled 'Tabitha', the Bewitched pronunciation of the name seems to indicate that they spell it with an 'a'.

Other than that possibility, the Aramaic name is spelled Tabitha. It is a name and has no animal meaning in Aramaic.

I can understand some confusion, since the name "Dorcas" in Greek does mean a gazelle. But Tabitha is no animal in Aramaic.

I do not regard the name as unusual, but the spelling "Tabatha" is indeed unusual. There is no such word in Hebrew or Aramaic!!!

Tabitha was alleged to have been resurrected by Peter.

Someone asked a week or so, "Do Buddhists believe in God, Heaven & Hell ?

Why is it... The Buddha never talked about the One God of the desert, the Judeo-Christian God? Does this mean that all Buddhists are atheists and don閳ユ獩 believe in God? Did the Buddha believe in God?

These are some of the questions I would like to try and answer today.

The Buddha was born 500 years before Christ, in what is now Nepal. His dad was a king, his mom was a queen, and his dad wanted him to take over the family business (the kingdom) when he got older.

The kind of world the Buddha was born into was magical. Everything seemed to be alive. The trees, mountains, lakes, and sky were living and breathing with a variety of gods in charge. If you needed rain you asked one god, if you needed it to stop raining you asked another. The priests of India did all the religious work, and got paid for it.

In India at the time of the Buddha you became a priest if you were born into the right family, and not because of the school you went to, or the grades you got.

There were other kinds of religious people as well.

Mendicants were men who left their family, friends, and jobs to find the answers to life. They did not live in homes or apartments, but lived under trees and in caves, and would practice meditation all day long. They wanted to really be uncomfortable, so they could understand what suffering was all about.

Many kinds of meditation were practiced by these mendicants. In Tranquility Meditation for instance, you think about just one thing, like looking at a candle or saying a word over and over. When the mind becomes focused in oneness, you experience a great peacefulness.

Even if the mendicants were sitting in the rain on a cold day, they were still content. They found in their meditation practice the essence of happiness.

Renunciation is when you give up all the things that make your life pleasant. Sometimes the people with money and power in India would buy a lot of stuff to make themselves happy and their lives more comfortable, thinking that happiness and comfort depended on what they owned.

When the mendicants could see their own suffering clearly, after many years of renunciation, they understood that happiness was not dependent on the things they owned, but the kind of life they lived.

Even all the gods in India could not end the suffering of one human being.

At the age of 29, the Buddha stopped praying to the gods to end his suffering and the suffering of others. He left his family and friends, went to the edge of the forest, took off all his clothes and jewelry, covered his naked body with rags of cloth, cut off his hair and started to meditate.

He became a mendicant, and It took him six years of hard work and much suffering, but in the end he was able to stop his suffering forever (Nirvana) and help others stop their suffering as well.

Did the Buddha believe in God, the One God of the desert, the God of the Christians, Jews and Muslims?

Well... No... He didn't... Monotheism (only one God) was a foreign concept to the Buddha, his world was filled with many gods. The creator god Brahma being the most important one.

At the time of the Buddha, the only people practicing the religion of the One God of the desert, were the Jews. Remember, it was still 500 years before Christ came into the world.

The Buddha never left India. The Buddha walked from village to village... In his entire lifetime he never went any further than 200 miles from his birthplace.

The Buddha never met a Jew... And because of this, he never said anything about the One God of the desert.

There is also nothing in the teachings of the Buddha that suggest how to find God or worship the god's of India, although the Buddha himself was a theist (believed in gods), his teachings are non-theistic.

The Buddha was more concerned with the human condition: Birth, Sickness, Old age, and Death. The Buddhist path is about coming to a place of acceptance with these painful aspects of life, and not suffering through them.

Please be clear on this point... The Buddha is not thought of as a god in Buddhism and is not prayed to. He is looked up to and respected as a great teacher, in the same way we respect Abraham Lincoln as a great president.

He was a human being who found his perfection in Nirvana. Because of his Nirvana, the Buddha was perfectly moral, perfectly ethical, and ended his suffering forever.

Does that mean that every Buddhist in the world is an atheist?

No!!! I have met a lot of Buddhists who believe in God. I have met a lot of Buddhists who don閳ユ獩 believe in God... And a lot of Buddhists just don閳ユ獩 know.

All three points of view are OK if you閳ユ獧e Buddhist because suffering is more important than God in Buddhism.

Sometimes a student will ask me how everything in this world got started... "If you don閳ユ獩 have God in Buddhism then who or what caused the universe?"

When the Buddha was asked how the world started, he kept silent. In the religion of Buddhism we don閳ユ獩 have a first cause, instead we have a never ending circle of birth and death. In this world and in all worlds, there are many beginnings and ends. The model of life used in Buddhism has no starting place... It just keeps going and going.

Now having said that... If you閳ユ獧e a Buddhist it閳ユ獨 OK to believe God was the first cause... It really doesn't go against the teachings of the Buddha, his focus was on suffering... It's also OK to believe science has the answer閳?Like the big bang theory, etc... Some Buddhist閳ユ獨 don閳ユ獩 even care how it all started, and that閳ユ獨 fine too. Knowing how the world started is not going to end your suffering, it閳ユ獨 just going to give you more stuff to think about.

I hope you can see that God is not what Buddhism is about... Suffering is... And if you want to believe in God, as some Buddhists do, I suppose it's OK. But, Buddhist's don't believe God can end suffering. Only the teaching's of the Buddha can help us end suffering through wisdom and the activity of compassion.

In his whole life and in all his teachings the Buddha never said anything about the One God of the desert.
