Question about dog food please help.?

so i bought my dog (long hair chihuahua 5 years old) some dog food in those little square plastic bowls that you just peel off the top and serve. she really likes it and thats good because im trying to have her like human food again. well my question is that what is a good brand similar to that type of food but doesnt cost an arm and a leg. she eats a lot for a little dog and those things costs 80 cents each. are the big can ones just as good? suggestions please.

First the reason she eats so much is because she isn't getting what she needs nutritionally from the food because it has cheap, low quality ingredients.

If she eats two of the .80 cent cans or $1.60 every meal and you could buy a can of $1.29, but she only needs one wouldn't you be saving .31 cents? So really the expensive brand would be better for her! So don't think about cost-but quality! Dogs who eat a high quality food eat less, poop less, have better skin/coat, less visits to the vet and on and on.

Old school is not to feed dogs wet food, but current research shows that they many especially kidney, liver, and dogs with stones absolutely need this. So wet food isn't the problem, it is genetics, lack of dental hygiene and food quality.

Certain breeds will have problems regardless of what type of food you feed, ie Yorkies, Chihuahua, Rat Terriers.

The dog dental diets use food abnormally large so when the dog splits it with their incisors it may knock off some of the build-up. However this does nothing for the canines in front. Canines are used for ripping and tearing into food. Not something our domestic dogs do! So feeding dry, wet, or moist will do nothing for those teeth!

If you want to do the best for your dog go raw or make your own BARF diet.

why on earth would you encourage a chihuahua to eat human food (or canned food for that matter)? toy breeds are genetically predisposed to having dental problems so they need to eat dry food that will help keep the tartar down on the teeth. please speak to your vet about the dog's diet asap!

Canned dog food is really NOT good for dogs, and should really only be given as a supplement to a diet based on a good dry dog food. Dry dog foods have more nutrients and most canned foods are just gunk/slop all mixed together. Ask your vet to recommend a good dry dog food for her size, age, etc. But again, do not feed a diet that is solely moist/canned food. Those are also not good for her teeth.

You shouldnt feed her human food, they get the poo's. I never gave our old dog soft food, I knew cats that ate soft food all the time and all their teeth fell out, and had rotten breath. I would try and feed her hard food, it is very good for their teeth, and it lasts longer. Sorry I didnt answer how you wanted I just thought I would pass on wisdom I have enquired over the last almost 28 years of life. Woah I am gettin old!!

I have to agree with the others. Canned food is horrible for dogs. If you don't believe it then look at the ingredients. Do you really know what they put in there? Also it is high in sugars, preservatives, and calories.

There are a lot of good dry foods out there. I would recommend one but I have large dogs. Try Pet Smart, Pet Co etc. Try not to get a grocery store brand of food.

Ok well the dog food your talkin about is exspensive....But lucky 4 you they have it in the store brand, (right beside it usually) buy that one. believe it or not probably packed by the same company....like richfood is usually starkist tuna, wonder bread etc... look at the ingredients more than not they wil be the same

dry dog food is the only good thing to feed them. it helps clean their teeth, and is good for digestion. plus, if you give them clean water to drink, then they don't need the wet food.

The Veterinarian brands are great and yes they cost more but if you sit down and calculate it she will eat less. So in the long run good food is cheaper. If the feeding suggestion for her weight is 1/2 cup you can feed less they always go to the high end of the scale.

All answers about can food are so true! Years back I had a maltese with rotten aching teeth and spent a fortune having to have his teeth cleaned at least once a year.

However, in addition to good quality dry food, don't forget to give him some fresh uncooked meat including bones, such as chicken wings. Dry food will not clean teeth, and is not good as the only diet. They need something fresh! My animals - both dogs and cats - have a variety of fresh meat for their main meal. The dogs get an addition of raw grated vegies, especially carrots with the meat. They only get dry food for breakfast.

If your dog is not used to chewing bones, you may have to persevere. Never leave food available all the time, they become very picky and lose appetite. Feed only when he is very hungry and asks for food. Even if you think it is meal time, but he doesn't seem interested, don't offer food. If he stops eating, remove leftovers straight away.

You will also find that feeding him raw meat is much cheaper than cans, especially if you look for specials.

I would suggest either Purina dog chow dry or Pedigree. My other dog who passed away in May would only eat pedigree %26amp; my puppy now is on Purina puppy chow but when she turns a yr old then she will be getting purina dog chow. DRY is alot better for their teeth %26amp; gums as well as their digestion. I'm w/ u I don't like spending an arm %26amp; leg on dog food so I try to get good food that's resaonable!!

I am concerned that you want her to like human food. Not only is human food not what she needs nutritionally, it is murder on her teeth. Just give her dog food!

To answer your question - look on the label of the can you choose. It should say "Guarateed to provide the basic daily nutritional requirements" or something very similar. Also look for food that has as its first two ingredients a meat or meat by-product. In other words, cereals and grains should be further down the list.

A dry food really is healthier for her. A good brand that you can get at the grocery store is IAMS. It has the best nutritional value and will help her coat to be healthy and shiny. When switching dog foods you should always mix what you are feeding now with the new food 1/2 and 1/2 for a few days to avoid upsetting her stomach. If she likes her food soft you can always put a little water over it to soften it. It also comes in small bites which is great for chihuahuas!
