Is Japanese Anime overrated, and why?

I admit I get a few pointers from the basic anime style in my own artwork, but I personally find anime annoying, probably because it's the lowest-common-denominator Dragon Ball Z-type stuff that ruins it. Also, just how much bigger and more watery are those eyes going to get, and if they're going to make noses so tiny, why don't they just get rid of them, altogether? It seems like when you remove the hair and clothing details, a lot of human/elf anime characters essentially look exactly the same, narrowed down to 4 or 5 basic "types" per gender.

I will freely admit to finding anime creatures a lot cooler than anime people, though . . .

Is Japanese Anime overrated, and why?

Like everything else, 90% of anime is crud. The fact that vast piles of terrible, or even just depressingly mediocre anime exists, does not exclude the fact that some of it is genuinely excellent. Ghost in the Shell, and its derivatives, for example.

I feel exceedingly sorry for those poor souls unable to resist the lure of crappy anime.

Is Japanese Anime overrated, and why?

yeah they are. and i agree with you. they look almost the same.

Is Japanese Anime overrated, and why?

They all look the same, I can't even tell the boy ones from the girl ones unless they have muscles. It is annoying how everyone likes it, but at the same time, it's addictive. I like it myself. The names are a little annoying though. But you have to admit that if it weren't for anime, we'd still be stuck watchng shows like camp lazlo and other corney american cartoons, and they're cartoons just don't have decent special effects or detail.

Is Japanese Anime overrated, and why?

Yes. It's popular in Asia because a lot of it is porn.

Is Japanese Anime overrated, and why?

Compare the fluid stylistic japanese animation to the flat, uninspiring style of American animation.

Sure it was cool as a kid, but have you ever gone back and watched shows like G.I Joe? Two armies, that fought with M-16s that fired lasers, and where no one ever died.

and. every. one. talked. like. this.

Remember that old X-men cartoon show? I loved that show as a kid. Then when I watched the "I'm the Juggernaut, *****!" short movie on the internet, and noticed how pitiful the fight scenes were. Just flat and lifeless and artificial. Compare that to anime shows, which are constantly pushing the envelop for high energy animation.

And you think anime has a problem with repetition? take that old X-men show again. If you were to simply show every character's face below the eyes, you wouldn't be able to tell them apart. Men or Women, Old or Young, Big or Small, they all are drawn exactly the same.

Now bear in mind, most of the animes on American television are the lower end of Japanese Animation. Dragon Ball Z was ground breaking in its day, 20 years ago, and it still hold up well. Most of the upper end Manga, like Akira, Princess Mononoke, Vampire Hunter D, are quite exquisite. How does that hold up to Upper eschelon American Animation? well, unfortunately, there is no upper level animation. Since most Americans are stuck in the mindset that cartoons are for children, they don't take the style as far as it could.

Is Japanese Anime overrated, and why?

I'm inclined to agree with you Pauly!!

Is Japanese Anime overrated, and why?

The anime style is just that... a style. Not everyone likes it. If you start looking at different kinds, though, you'll be able to tell that there are different styles of design within anime and manga. I agree that sometimes the huge eyes and tiny noses are annoying, but not all of them are that extreme.

As much as I love the old cartoons I watched as a kid, many American cartoons today are completely lacking in worth. The illustration all looks like flash animation, the colors give headaches, and they're so loud and obnoxious that I can hardly stand hearing them. I havnt watched much anime... frankly, Inuyasha is the only one I'm interested in... but from what I've seen in others its very artistic. Everything is very fluid and graceful, and the unique way emotions are expressed in anime grow on you after a while. (I think that's one reason eyes are drawn so large in anime and manga- they're used to express most of the emotion in the face).

Anyway... its very popular in America, but don't knock it. I think mtv and just about all popular music today is overrated... to each his own, right? =P
