That's just it...clearly you don't get it...people aren't to be judged on appearance alone. Regardless of what they wear one must be open to them and receptive. I am quite sure your also not fond of people of color or Orthodox Jews or anyone else who dresses or looks funny to you. Its not to force anyone anything. For you to suggest Muslim women are not human then it only says something about you and nothing about them. Just a few decades ago all women dressed modestly, heck the swim suit and the mini skirt are only of the last century.

The burka as a completely covering garment is not particularly part of Islamic teachings, it is a cultural expression like wearing blue jeans or sarongs. Islam does ask women to wear hijab, which simply means clothing that is not revealing. Depending on your ethnic culture, that will mean different things. It could mean a long dress or wearing slacks. It could mean wearing a head scarf or keeping long hair. It basically means that a woman should dress in a way so that her appearance is not a "come on" to men who see her. Judging from the things you write, you think of women as sexual animals. If a woman is wise, and respects herself as a special person created by God, she will not let herself become part of that fantasy game. She can look attractive and pretty, but not by showing parts of her body, or even the shape of her body which are her own business. A woman owns her own body, and modest dress and behavior is the sign to the world that she respects herself and demands respect. I have a Muslim friend who is an American married to an Iranian. She lived in Iran for several years, and said she came to appreciate the long covering they wear there. She liked being able to go around anonymously on the street and not be bothered by men. When I visited there, I saw an interesting sight. A young woman, maybe 18 or 19, was passing by, holding her long robe around her, under her chin (they don't cover the face). The wind was blowing strong and blew aside her robe. Underneath, she was dressed just like teenaged girls here - long-sleeved T shirt, jeans, and Nikes. Women and girls at home aren't covered in a sack, even in a fundamentalist country like Iran. Did you know that when Muslim women make the Hajj (the pilgrimage to Mecca), they do not veil their faces? Everyone making the Hajj has to dress in a sort of uniform, so that all people are alike, like one family. Just think how those Burka girls would feel if they and their families believed showing their faces was wrong?

Wearing a total covering may offend you, and I am sure that some women don't care for it, but why are you so fired up about it? What makes you so threatened? Judge women by their characters when you get to know them, not by how they look at first glance. And don't judge a religion by the fact that you can't ogle their women!

Here's an interesting point. The Burka (as in full face covering) is not actually required by Islam. It predates Islam and is part of an older Arabic tradition.

Actually all ppl are initially judged by their appearance. If you want people to recognize that you have money you wear designer lables, if you want ppl to recognize that you have a fit body you wear body revealing clothing, if you want people to recognize your long legs you wear a short skirt, the list could go on forever.

The point is that people dress in a way that allows them to be recognized for what they view as important. Some don't care at all about fashion, but even their appearance is a testament to that. What people can recognize in one another determines how people treat one another. If you are a prostitute you dress in a way that identifies you as such, and you welcome sexual advances because sexual behavior is most important to you as it is your job. If you are a doctor and in a hosp., you dress in a way that communicates to ppl that that is what you are.

If you are a Muslim woman who covers you WANT to be recognized as such by everyone who sees you. You dont want anyone to confuse with anything else because that identity is what is most important to you and will not be compromised.

The reality is that many people may not understand why Muslim women cover as they do, some even hate it, some think its comical. Whatever view one has you know that when you see this woman she is not someone who wants to play around, and be bothered with foolishness.
